Join us at Photoville for an exhibition showcasing ten images from Women Photograph’s inaugural book, What We See — featuring Gabriella N. Báez, Nina Berman, Luisa Dörr, Citlali Fabián, Lola Flash, Tanya Habjouqa, Kiana Hayeri, Tara Pixley, Anastasia Taylor-Lind, and Patience Zalanga:

What We See is Women Photograph’s first book, featuring the work of 100 members of our community and spanning 50 years of photographic history. The book includes key images from photojournalism and documentary photography from the last half century and also explores some of the many ways in which photographers are working to redefine the medium today. These ten artists offer a glimpse into What We See’s range—from Nina Berman’s documentation of white supremacists in the 1990s to Tanya Habjouqa’s quiet portrait of a Palestinian family to Patience Zalanga and Gabriella N. Báez’s searing photos of civil uprisings in Minneapolis and San Juan. We’re proud to present this excerpt of our vision of the world through the lens of women and nonbinary photographers.

Who we are as photographers matters. When photographers tell stories, how do their identities influence the way they photograph? When working on long term personal projects, how do photographers mange their relationship with those they photograph? How do photographers from marginalized backgrounds empower themselves and tell stories about communities they care about? What does the work they create say differently about the world? Join photographers Mengwen Cao, Mary Kang, Melissa Bunni Elian, and Annie Tritt at Adorama for a conversation on “Centering the Margins,” presented by the Photo Brigade.

Gallery O on H Street and Women Photograph invite you to join them for the opening reception of “Insider/Outsider,” an exhibit curated by Women Photograph. There will be music in the courtyard by John Lewis as part of the opening night for the DC Jazz Festival.

“Insider/Outsider” explores the relationship between photographer and subject matter. Holistic storytelling requires both local and alien perspectives. These images seek to interrogate how those differences affect representation, access, and intimacy. Who has the right to tell a story? Are there limitations on objectivity as an insider, or sensitivity as an outsider? Presented as two parallel exhibitions, “Insider/Outsider” seeks to start a conversation about how photographers tell stories, how they define their own relationships to the people and issues they cover, and how their lives impact the stories they tell.
